No. 12 Cal Falls To Wake Forest, 2-1

Sept. 26, 2003

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - No. 12 California saw its six-game unbeaten streak end after losing to Wake Forest, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Stewart Field on the campus of Colorado College. The Golden Bears dropped to 3-1-3, while the Demon Deacons improved to 6-1-1. Cal leads the all-time series, 2-1.

'I'm disappointed in my team,' said Cal coach Kevin Boyd. 'We held most of the possession. After Wake Forest went up 2-1, they played a 4-5-1 and packed it in and played for the counter. We did a poor job finding good ways to attack the bunker.'

The Bears held an 11-9 shot advantage for the game but only launched three shots on goal -- all from freshman forward Alivia Mazura -- to the Demon Deacons' five.

Cal grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on Mazura's first collegiate goal. Mazura, who also made her first start for the Bears, received a pass from senior midfielder Kassie Doubrava and scored from about 10 yards. Doubrava has assumed the team lead with five points (2G, 1A), all coming in the last three contests.

Wake Forest scored the equalizer in the 41st minute on a goal by Sarah Kozey from 25 yards. A.B. Robbins was credited with the assist.

Keisha Garrick netted the game-winning goal for the Demon Deacons in the 63rd minute with a 40-yard, wind-aided shot into the far upper corner of the net.

Both of Wake Forest's goals came after Cal's senior sweeper, Ashley Valenzuela, left the game after aggravating a hamstring injury.

Cal looks to get back on track against Colorado College on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. PT.
