No. 16 Texas Hands Washington State 2-0 Loss

Washington State lost to No. 16 Texas Friday, Sept. 26 in front of a season-high crowd of 2,289 at Mike A. Meyers Stadium, Austin, Texas.
The first twenty minutes of the match was dominated by defense, with neither team creating very many offensive chances. But the Longhorns took advantage of a loose ball opportunity at the 21 minute mark to score the first goal of the match.
UT freshman Carrie Schmit headed a cross from Amy Burlington who corralled a loose ball from the right side of the WSU penalty area, into the back of the Cougars net to put Texas up 1-0.
The Cougs went into half-time recording four shots and one corner kick opportunity, but still with a 1-0 deficit.Washington State picked up the pressure in the second-half, out shooting Texas 10-6, but the Longhorns would post the only goal of the second-half.
In the 69th minute Texas scored on a penalty kick that resulted from a foul in the Cougar's penalty box. The current Longhorn leading-scorer Kelly McDonald finished the penalty for her sixth goal of the year to pull UT up 2-0.
After the goal, Texas' defense and goal keeper Dana Hall, who registered six saves, kept the Cougars off the board to earn UT their third shut-out of the season.
Cougar sophomore defender Carmen Anderson saw game time, returning to the lineup after suffering an ankle injury in WSU's 4-0 victory over Montana Sept. 7.
Washington State is 3-5-0 going into their match against No. 3 Texas A&M Sunday, Sept 28 at 7 p.m. at College Station, Texas.
