WSU Tennis Completes Second Day at BYU Invitational

PROVO, Utah -- The Washington State women's tennis team recorded seven victories in the second day of the BYU Invitational Friday.
In the No. 1 singles consolation bracket No. 41 Orsolya Sallai defeated Utah State's Lindsey Bennion, 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-3. Sallai will square off with Alexandra Ilie of Weber State for a possible fifth place finish Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Freshman Amy Toth received only her second loss in No. 1 singles competition. Toth was defeated by Jemima Hayward of Boise State, 6-4, 6-1. Toth's only two losses, on the season, are to Hayward, the first was in the Cougar Classic Sept. 20. Her next opponent is Colorado State's Emily Kirchem. The two will meet Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Senior Lorena Arias suffered a three-set loss to Brigham Young's Lauren Jones, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. Arias is set to compete against Erin Polowski of Boise State for a possible third place finish Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
WSU junior Chris Martinez increased her singles win streak to five after knocking off Boise State's Megan Biorkman 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 4 bracket. Martinez will face Rebecca Pike of BYU in the finals Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Cougar senior Zorana Roganovic recorded her fifth straight win as well. Competing in the No. 5 bracket she defeated Anna Curtolo of Boise State, 6-1, 6-1. Brigham Young's Nicole Schneider will be her next opponent in the finals Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
In No. 6 singles play Zsofia Fodor was defeated by Colorado State's Tatyana Ugorich, 7-6(4), 6-4. Fodor is set to face Andrea Hanson of Utah State Saturday at 10 a.m. to capture third place.
WSU Freshman Nelly Dvornicka defeated Chelsee Drews of Weber State (6-1, 6-2) in No. 6 singles consolation play. Dvornicka will face Utah's Rachel Alder Saturday at 10 a.m.
'It was a challenging day,' WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said. 'Everyone fought really hard. Zsofi and Nora played exceptionally well in doubles to come from behind and win the title.'
Cougar pair No. 41 Arias/Martinez lost to Boise State's Hayward/Polowski (8-6) in the semifinals round of No. 1 doubles competition. Arias/Martinez faced fellow Cougar doubles pair Toth/Sallai for a third place finish and were victorious, 8-6.
Before losing to Arias/Martinez, the WSU tandem of Toth/Sallai were defeated by No. 21 Barbara Zahnova/Sofia Holden of Brigham Young (8-2) in the semifinals round.
In No. 2 doubles play WSU duo Fodor/Gaal knocked off Ayling/Biorkman of Boise State, 9-7 in the semifinal match. In the final match Fodor/Gaal defeated Brigham Young's Hadley MacFarlane/Schneider, 8-6, to take the title.
The Cougar freshman-senior duo of Dvornicka/Roganovic beat Boise State's Curtolo/Koprivica (9-8(5)) in the semifinals round. The WSU pair faced Curtolo/Koprivica earlier this season in the Cougar Classic and defeated them there as well. In the finals match Dvornicka/Roganovic were defeated by Jones/Rebecca Pike of Brigham Young, 8-1.
