Nationally-Recognized OSU Rowing Teams Seeking Students For Freshman/Novice Programs

Sept. 27, 2003

The nationally-recognized Oregon State men's and women's rowing teams are seeking students who are interested in competing on its freshman/novice teams.

An informational meeting for those interested in learning more is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. in Gill Coliseum on Ralph Miller Court.

No rowing experience is necessary to join the team. In fact, nearly 90 percent of OSU's nationally-ranked squads had no rowing experience before joining the team.

Both programs have produced multiple Olympic and National Team rowers. Most recently, Joey Hansen has been a three-year member of the U.S. men's eight and helped the boat to a silver medal at the World Championships in August.

Amy Martin was a four-time National-Team member, and rowed in the 2000 Olympics.

Neither rower had rowing experience prior to coming to OSU.

Last year, the OSU men's team finished ninth at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships in Camden, N.J. The women's program has qualified for the NCAA Championships three of the last seven years while rowing in the highly-competitive Pacific-10 Conference.
