Sept. 28, 2003

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Arizona's men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Minneapolis for the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday. The University of Minnesota played host to one of the nation's premier cross country meets at the Les Bolstad Golf Course. The Wildcat men continued their success with a sixth-place showing among a strong field of competitors. The task was a bit tougher for the UA women, as they finished 21st in the overall team standings.

Freshman Robert Cheseret is proving to be a gem for the men's cross country team. He led the team with a second-place finish, covering the 8,000-meter course in 24:00. Cheseret finished only two seconds behind BYU's Kip Kangogo. Kangogo is considered one of the favorites to win the national title in November.

Junior Jonah Maiyo was the second Wildcat across the finish line on Saturday. The junior college transfer finished ninth overall in 24:32. Senior Matt McInvale was the third Wildcat finisher, claiming 68th place in 25:27.

The Arizona men were also helped out by Jin Daikoku (138th, 26:03) and Eric Chavez (140th, 26:04).

On the women's side, junior Beth Hoge led the Wildcats, finishing 72nd in 22:15 on the 6,000-meter course. Sophomore Adrienne Goeller was the next Wildcat across the line. She finished 105th with a time of 22:41. Senior Nicole Gurnicz was 122nd, crossing the line at 22:50 as the third Wildcat finisher.
