OSU Second After Two Rounds at Husky Invitational

Sept. 29, 2003

BREMERTON, Wash.-Oregon State's Brad Simpson fired a 3-under 141 in the first two rounds to lead OSU into second place at Washington's Opus Husky Invitational at the par-72 Gold Mountain Golf Complex.

Utilizing a scoring system where the top five of six total scores count, OSU posted a team score of 740, just nine shots behind leader Washington.

UCLA and California, ranked third and fourth respectively in the GolfWeek poll, are tied for fifth.

Brock Mackenzie, a U.S. Walker Cup Team member, led Washington and the entire field, shooting 70 in each of the first two rounds to give him a total score of 4-under 140 and a one-stroke lead over Simpson going into Tuesday's final round.

OSU's Sean Deacon carded a 3-over 147 and is tied for 13th.

Freshman Ryan Gilmour, coming off a fifth-place finish at last week's Northwest Collegiate Classic, shot a 4-over 148 and is tied for 18th.

'This is a great field,' OSU coach Brian Watts said. 'I feel really good about what we did today - the guys just battled.

'This is definitely a golf course where, if you're not managing your ball, it can reach out and bite you real quick. We struggled a bit in the first round, but the guys hung in there and fought hard. Now, they're in a position to win a golf tournament, and that's what you play for.'

Brian Kelley, less than a week after tying for eighth at the Northwest Collegiate, posted a 151 and is tied for 29th. Jonathan Green is tied for 34th at 153 and Mitch Gillis is four shots back at 52nd.

The tournament concludes tomorrow with the final 18 holes beginning at 7:30 a.m.
