The Southern Golf Association has named UCLA junior John Poucher its National Amateur of the Month, the association announced Thursday.
Poucher, a two-year letterman, won his first collegiate title last month. He defeated a nationally ranked field over 36 holes at the Fall Preview, hosted by Virginia Tech at The Cascades in Hot Springs, VA. Poucher posted scores of 70-68-138 for a four-under par score. He is currently ranked 23rd in the nation.
'We're certainly very excited for John,' said UCLA Coach O.D. Vincent. 'He's a valuable part of our team and we're very proud of his success.'
Poucher has enjoyed an outstanding fall, placing among the Top 15 in his first three appearances this season. He tied for 13th at the Inverness Invitational (Sept. 19-20), won the Fall Preview (Sept. 22-23) and tied for eighth at the Husky Invitational (Sept. 29-30). His scoring average of 72.8 ranks second on the team and his score of 68 in the final round of the Fall Preview is tied for the lowest round this season by a UCLA player.
Poucher's victory at the Fall Preview was the Bruins' second of the season, producing the team's second team title. At the Inverness Invitational, senior John Merrick won medallist honors. In their last 11 tournaments, the Bruins have won eight times and produced five individual champions. UCLA finished third at the NCAA Championships in May and has finished among the Top 5 teams in its last 16 events. Currently, the Bruins are ranked third in the country.
Other nominees included Aron Price, a junior at Georgia Southern and Sam Saunders, the 15-year old grandson of Arnold Palmer. Price won a pair of collegiate tournaments in September and Saunders won the Men's Club Championship at Bay Hill Club.
