No. 8 UCLA Volleyball Needs Five to Defeat Cougars

Oct. 2, 2003

PULLMAN, Wash. -- No. 8 UCLA came back after losing the first two games to defeat Washington State 23-30, 27-30, 30-25, 30-27, 15-10, Thursday night at Bohler Gym.

UCLA moves to 11-2 overall, 3-1 in Pac-10 play while WSU drops to 5-9 overall, 2-3 in conference action.

'We played two really good games tonight and then we thought we had it in the bag so we kind of stopped competing,' Cougar Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said. 'We didn't really play with a sense of urgency and didn't get our blocks where we needed to have them. UCLA picked it up and we let it down.'

UCLA's Brynn Murphy led all players with 21 kills (.311) and had two aces, 11 digs and four blocks. Cira Wright, Heather Cullen and Becky Green combined for 42 Bruins' kills but UCLA hit a mere .167. Chrissie Zartman, the UCLA libero, had 16 digs.

WSU was led by the 19 kills of Kristen Carlson (.068). Setter Brenn Larson added six kills, 17 digs and 49 assists. Zanda Bautre had 11 kills and 13 digs. Jennifer Todd had 10 kills and the match-high six blocks. Jen Barcus added 11 kills (.346) and five blocks while Kelly Rosin had 10 kills (.348) and five blocks. WSU hit .183 for the five games but out-blocked UCLA 12 to 11. The Cougars did not have a service ace in the match while UCLA landed six.

After winning the first two games, the Cougars and Bruins were tied at 22 but UCLA collected five consecutive points to take control of the game. WSU fought back with kills from Todd and Rosin before UCLA's McFarland put them at game point. After two tries, UCLA won game three, 30-25.

WSU had a 22-16 lead in the fourth game but allowed the Bruins to get back into contention with the game knotted at 25 points. Cullen landed a pair of points on attacks before Carlson counted with a kill. Cullen came back to put the score at 28-26, UCLA. The squads traded attack errors, moving the score to 29-27 when Green laced the final kill for the 30-27 UCLA win.

The experienced Bruins did not hesitate in the fifth game, running up a 10-5 lead. The freshman-dominated Cougars fought back but UCLA held on to the 15-10 game win and 3-2 match win.

This was the fifth five-game match for WSU this season and the fifth loss.

Washington State takes on No. 1 USC Friday night at Bohler Gym. The Women of Troy did not play Thursday night.
