Late Goal Sinks No. 20 Women Of Troy's Hopes

Oct. 3, 2003

PROVO, Utah - Annie Zwahlen's goal at 88:37 gave the BYU Cougars a 2-1 non-conference victory Friday against the No. 20 USC Trojans at South Stadium. Zwahlen scored in front of the net as the Women of Troy were unable to clear the ball.

BYU (8-3-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Brooke Thulin scored at 22:33 off a ricochet in front of the net. USC (4-4-3) scored on a similar goal at 53:45 on Kelly Blais' second goal of the season. The Cougars kept the pressure on in the second half as the possibility of overtime became apparent.

'We got off to a slow start and it wasn't good enough to get a result,' said USC head coach Jim Millinder.

USC was without the services of starting senior forward Jessica Edwards (out 3-4 weeks with a fractured right leg) and two key reserves Amy Mann (ankle sprain) and Jenna Killion (flu).

The Women of Troy will begin Pac-10 Conference play against Washington on Thursday (Oct. 9) at 3 p.m. at McAlister Field. The game will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on FOX Sports Net.
