CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Two scores from sophomore Stacey Mescher boosted Oregon State to a 4-0 non-conference win over Weber State in women's soccer action Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium, lifting the Beavers' record to 4-5-1.
Tessa Baker opened the scoring for OSU, taking the ball 30 yards through the defense to put a shot past Weber State (2-6-0) goalkeeper Melanie Stratford from 10 yards out in the 29th minute.
Mescher tallied her first goal of the year when she converted a deflected Janelle Joy pass 44 seconds later at 28:54 to give OSU a 2-0 lead and set a new OSU record for least time between goals.
Mescher, from Mission Viejo, Calif., made it 3-0 at 35:52 when she went 1-on-1 with Stratford after a lead pass from Brianna Monka up the right side.
'We played well today,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'I was very pleased with our performance - we've been going hard in practice all week and have been up-beat. We stayed patient and got the result we wanted today.
'We scored some good goals. It was nice to see Tessa Baker back on the scoresheet as well as seeing Mescher get her first two scores of the season. This was just a solid all-around performance.'
OSU ended a five-game losing skid Friday, a streak that included three one-goal losses in a row.
The Beavers' four goals were a season-high, and the shutout was their third of the year.
The Beavers travel to Portland Saturday for a matchup with the defending national champion Portland Pilots at 3:30 p.m. at Merlo Field.
'We go up to Portland tomorrow and we're excited to play them - it's a great atmosphere,' Fennah said.
