TEMPE, AZ - The No. 9 ranked California volleyball team remained undefeated (13-0, 5-0), topping host Arizona State (6-7, 1-3), 3-1 (30-25, 30-27, 23-30, 30-25) Friday evening at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
The Bears were again led by junior All-American Mia Jerkov, who recorded a team-high 22 kills and 18 digs. Jerkov has led Cal in kills in 12 of Cal's 13 matches this season. The Bears were also led by junior Camille Leffall, who was second on the team with 14 kills and had an impressive .565 hitting percentage (14 kills, only one error in 23 attempts). Freshman setter Samantha Carter finished with 49 assists and had 10 digs.
As a team, Cal hit .281 for the match. The Bears are one of only three undefeated teams ranked in USA Today/AVCA Top 10 and are in first place in the Pac-10 standings.
'I am pleased that we came out on top, but it was not one of our best performances,' said Cal coach Rich Feller, who has led the Bears to their best start in school history. 'Even though we did not play our best, it is nice to know we are still good enough to win a tough Pac-10 match on road.'
The Bears will next travel to Arizona, Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. at McKale Center in Tucson.
