No. 16 Cal Blanks Marquette, 2-0

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - No. 16 California blanked Marquette, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields for its fifth shutout of the season. The Golden Bears improved to 5-2-3, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 5-6-1.

'This is a good win,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'Marquette is a good team. We're pretty happy with the win.'

The game was scoreless until the 82nd minute when freshman reserve forward Bri Wiles launched her first collegiate goal. Freshman defender Emily Ward was credited with her first collegiate assist.

'After a lot of scrappy play in front of their goal and numerous opportunity, Bri got a ball that popped out to her off a deflection off the goalkeeper,' said Boyd. 'The keeper made a save wide, and Bri popped it over the keeper for the goal.'

Senior midfielder Kassie Doubrava posted an insurance goal in the 86th minute, with Wiles earning her first collegiate assist. The goal for Doubrava was her team-best third of 2003. She also leads Cal with seven points this season.

Cal outshot Marquette, 10-5, including 5-1 in shots on goal. Bears freshman goalkeeper Anna Key saved the Golden Eagles' only shot on goal on a tough one-one-one opportunity. Cal also held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal opens Pac-10 play at Arizona State on Friday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. MT and at Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. MT.
