Arizona Women's Tennis Travel to California for ITA All-American

ITA All-American: The Arizona women's tennis team will travel to Pacific Palisades, Calif. this week to compete in the ITA All-American. The premier hard-court event of the fall collegiate season, the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships feature the top players in NCAA Division I tennis. The tournament is one of three national championship events held during the season. The Riviera Tennis club plays host to the tournament for the fifteenth straight year. The Oct. 9-12 main draw is preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. The 64-player (32 doubles) prequalifying tournament was Oct. 4-5 at UCLA and four players and doubles teams advanced from there to the Oct. 7-8 64-player qualifying tournament at Riviera.
Pre-Qualifying Rounds: The pre-qualifying round of the tournament took place on Oct. 4th and 5th. Senior Debbie Larocque, sophomore Iza Ferreira, and freshman Kasia Jakowlew all competed in the pre-qualifying singles round. All three Wildcats lost in their first match of the round. Larocque was defeated by Alabama's Robin Stephenson 7-6(3), 6-1. Ferriera lost to Texas A &M's Lauren Walker 7-5, 6-3. Jakowlew lost in two sets to Marshall's Jessica Johnson 6-4, 6-3. The Wildcats did not have any participants in the pre-qualifying doubles round.
Making the Trip: Traveling for Arizona this week will be juniors Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar, and sophomore Iza Ferreira. Hollands will compe te in the qualifying singles round. The doubles team of Ferreira and Mlakar will also compete in the qualifying doubles round. Qualifying round action for singles and doubles will begin on Oct. 7th and continue to Oct. 8th. Mlakar will start in the main-draw singles round on Oct. 9th.
Continued Success: Juniors Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands will look to carry the momentum from the Baylor Invitational to the ITA All-American. The two were supposed to compete in the finals round in Waco, TX as a doubles team, and Mlakar was scheduled to compete in the finals of the singles bracket, but the matches were cancelled due to rain in Waco.
