Cal Gets Ready for First Major of the Year

This week Conor Niland (#25) and Balazs Veress (#81) will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Icy Hot/ITA All-American event, Oct. 7-12. Veress will be playing in the singles qualifying, while Niland is set to compete in the main draw of singles and the qualifying of doubles with Veress. Others including, Patrick Briaud, Tyler Browne, Jake Leivent, Kuni Minato, Andreas Petersen, John Pettit, Dean Wallace and Wayne Wong will all compete in a three-day tournament, the Bulldog Classic, down in Fresno.
Veress and Niland have already had a highly competitve tune-ups for the event. Veress (1-2) lost his first two matches of the Napa Valley Tennis Classic, but was able to rally back in his third match, to defeat a very good Ryler Deheart of Illinois. Niland (2-1) split his first two matches at Meadowwood, but finished up the touney strong with a thrilling 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win over Illinois' Chris Martin.
The two are a perfect 2-0 in the early going in doubles, defeating Lester Cook and Marvin Rolle of Texas A&M, while also upending the Georgia pair of Strahinja Bobusic and Martias Ormaza.
