Goldhahn Aces No. 23 Pacific In Cardinal 3-1 Victory

Stanford, Calif. - Sophomore setter Katie Goldhahn (Lodi, Calif.) tallied a career-high six service aces as the fourth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team defeated No. 23 Pacific, 3-1, tonight in a mid-week non-conference match. Game scores were 30-17, 25-30, 30-23, 30-19.
The Cardinal improve to 13-2 overall while the Tigers fall to 8-6 on the year. Stanford improves its season-high winning streak to seven matches with the victory.
The Cardinal opened game one on a 7-2 run before the Tigers made a run of their own to pull within one at 6-7. Stanford regained the large lead at 13-7 after three consecutive UOP hitting errors. SU led 15-10 at the media timeout after a kill by Ogonna Nnamani. Pacific took their first timeout trailing 19-13 after a block solo by freshman Kristin Richards and their second at 14-23 after a block solo by Jennifer Hucke. Stanford continued to cruise reaching game point at 29-16 on a Nnamani kill. Another Nnamani kill gave the Cardinal the 30-17 win.
With the Tigers leading 7-6 in game two, Stanford strung together four consecutive points to force a UOP timeout at 10-7 after a dump by Katie Goldhahn. But Pacific rebounded to take the lead at 13-12 on a Cardinal hitting error. Stanford took their first timeout trailing 14-16 and their second at 21-23. The Tigers pushed forward reaching game point at 29-24 and put the game away at 30-25 to even up the match at one game apiece.
Stanford raced to a 7-0 lead to open game three and took a 15-6 advantage into the second UOP timeout after a kill by Jennifer Harvey. The Cardinal led 22-9 after another Harvey kill, however took a timeout as the Tigers closed the gap to 14-23. Stanford went up 28-18 on a UOP hitting error but the Tigers scored four consecutive points to close to 22-28. The Cardinal reached game point on a kill by Ogonna Nnamani and won game three 30-23 on another Nnamani kill.
Game four remained close until Stanford opened up a four point lead at 10-6 on a kill by Katie Goldhahn. The Cardinal led 13-7 after a Sara McGee kill. Leading 13-9, Stanford went on a seven point run to go up 20-9. The Cardinal took a timeout after the Tigers closed the gap to 14-21 after a UOP kill. SU continued to press taking a 27-18 lead on a Jennifer Harvey kill and reached game point on a Pacific hitting error at 29-18. Jennifer Hucke sealed the victory for the Cardinal with a kill at 30-19.
Junior Ogonna Nnamani led the match with 18 kills and 14 digs to notch her sixth double-double of the season. Freshman Kristin Richards added 10 kills and 10 digs to the Cardinal effort. Middle blocker Jennifer Harvey had 13 kill and a match-high seven blocks while teammate Sara McGee had 10 kills and three blocks on the night.
Pacific was led by Jennifer Joines' 14 kills and seven blocks. Stevie Mussie added 10 kills while Ashley Groothius had 11 on the evening.
Stanford returns to league play this weekend against the ninth-ranked California Golden Bears in a 3 p.m. match on October 11 in Berkeley at Haas Pavilion.
