Veress Loses Hard-Fought Match
Oct. 7, 2003
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Day one of the 2003 ITA All-American Championships will probably be a day Cal senior Balazs Veress will want to forget. Veress was upended in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, by Thomas Schoedk of Boise State, despite a viliant effort.
Veress came out swinging in the first set, but could not muster up enough to pull it out, falling 6-4. In the second frame Veress asserted himself, using all angles of the court, to win 6-3 - setting up a nail-biting third set that went back and forth before Schoedk ended it, 7-6.
Veress is now 1-3 in singles competition early this season but will look to rebound in doubles later in the week as he pairs with Conor Niland. The two will face Sean Kelleher and Stephen Ward of William & Mary.
