Arizona's Strong Finish Nets Ihlanfeldt Title
Oct. 8, 2003
Seattle - Arizona outdueled California and UCLA during the final nine holes of play to claim its first Edean Ihlanfelt Invitational title since 1991. The third-ranked Wildcats turned in a final round score of 304 at Sahalee Country Club to win the tournament by three strokes at 32-over 896. California, which held a one-stroke lead heading into the final round, tied UCLA for second at 899. Three-time defending champion USC was fourth at 914. Washington placed ninth at 930.
'I told the team in the van this morning that par on this course was a good score,' said Arizona coach Greg Allen. 'When the wind came up and it started to rain and the cedar needles were blowing around on the greens, I started believing that bogie was going to be a good score today. The course played really tough today, but our players hung in there and made a couple of big putts on 16 and 17 that were the difference.'
The Wildcats were led by Erica Blasberg, who tied USC's Irene Cho for medalist honors at 3-over 219. Blasberg shot 74 during the final round, which proved to be the second best score for the day. No player managed to break par Wednesday as occasional showers combined with gusty winds to challenge the field.
Blasberg played the Sahalee course even until the final two holes when she carded a double bogie on the 155-yard par-3 17th hole. That proved to be the Wildcats only miscue down the stretch. Mar Garcia managed par on the 16th hole and Whitney Welch knocked in a birdie on 17 to allow the Wildcats to complete the three finishing holes at even par and hold on for the win.
'Our goal this year is to be in every tournament coming into the final nine holes,' Allen said. 'We did that during our first tournament, but we were not as good at that in the second one. I thought we played ourselves back into that position yesterday. It has been a while since UA has won this tournament, so it is a good feeling.'
Cho was one of three players who shot 1-over 73 during the final round. San Francisco's Kristi Larsen also carded a 73 to move from up from 10th to third on the final round's leaderboard.
Washington, which shot 309, had moved all the way to fifth place before the Huskies finished their final two holes at four-over par.
'It was disappointing in terms of what we did today and where we finished overall,' said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'I liked the way our freshmen performed this week and it was great to see Paige Mackenzie turn in our best finish.'
Mackenzie, playing in her first college tournament in 10 months due to a back injury, shot 74 during the final round to place 17th overall at 13-over 229. She opened the tournament with an 81 before posting back-to-back scores of 74.
Washington freshman Ashley Bickerton was 21st at 230 while classmate Amber Prange finished 34th at 234. Sung Ea Lee shot 238 and Lindsay Morgan did not break 80 during the week while posting a 245 score. Freshman Amy Wang, competing as a non-scoring player, shot 243 while fellow freshman Courtney McCracken completed her first tournament at 246. She was also a non-scoring player.
The Huskies return to the links Oct. 17-19 for the Stanford Intercollegiate tournament.
