Oct. 8, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore -- -
With a 4-0 shutout of Fresno State on Oct. 5, Peter Billmeyer became theall-time OSU leader with 13 career shutouts. Through this season Billmeyer,a senior from Omaha, Neb., has been a big part of the Beaver defense andhas added to his streak of 50 consecutive games started in goal. He alsoholds the school record for career saves with 292, as well as season saveswith 100 (2002). Here is a recent interview with the co-captain:
YOU'VE COME OUT STRONG THIS YEAR WITH A 1.23 GAA AND THREE SHUTOUTS. DID YOU OR THE TEAM CHANGE ANYTHING IN THE OFF-SEASON TO PREPARE YOU FOR THIS SEASON?
'The biggest change I would have to say is in terms of our goalkeeper coachAnthony Latronica. That was a huge change. We have tried to do a couple oflittle things, but all around we tried to keep it consistent. In my area itwas more concern for team defense, but I can't say that I personally had abig change other than the goalkeeper coach situation.'
WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE YOUR GREATEST STRENGTHS ON THE FIELD?
'I think experience obviously for the start of the season has been a bighelp. Athleticism, and maybe resolve would be some of the big ones.'
WITH THE PAC-10 SEASON NOW UNDERWAY, DO YOU FEEL THAT THIS YEAR'S TEAM HAS GROWN FROM THE START OF THE SEASON?
'Definitely. We still haven't put together our best game and we're not quiteplaying to the top level of our game, but we are getting there. My first twoyears we couldn't find our top level, and last year we found it early and wehad trouble trying to repeat it. This year we are still improving, which isimportant, and we are hoping that our best play will come to us at the righttime in the near future.'
BEING THE GOALKEEPER, A VERY STRESSFUL POSITION, HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THEPRESSURE OF A CLOSE GAME AND KEEP YOUR COMPOSURE?
'Well, I feel that I am not always the most composed guy, but I feel that myexperience helps a lot. Just trying to go out there and remember what I havedone before and feeding off past experiences has helped me out.'
YOUR RECORD IS 7-4-0 AND LOOKING TO MAKE YOUR SECOND STRAIGHT TRIP TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO GET SOME BIG WINS ON THE ROAD, LIKE THIS WEEKEND'S MATCHES AGAINST STANFORD AND CAL?
'You never want to place huge emphasis on one single game or weekend.Obviously we are in a position where we need to get some wins down and makesure we make some improvements on our past road history in the Pac-10.'
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT PLAYING SOCCER FOR OSU?
'Hands down, it's the guys on the team. The brotherhood of this team is really something else. You don't get through the passing of two of your teammates without eachother. There is not a closer team in the country in my mind.'
