Niland Splits Two
Oct. 9, 2003
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Conor Niland needed every ounce of energy he had left to muster, to beat Oklahoma State's Mark Van Elden (6-3, 2-6, 7-5) in three sets at the ITA All-American Championships. After a grueling week of doubles and singles competition, including a 6-3, 6-2, loss to #1 seed Bendikt Dorsch of Baylor earlier in the day, Niland could sigh in relief when he finally earned his seventh point of the third set, to put an end to a long duel with Van Elden.
With that victory Niland will move on to the second round in the consolation bracket. His opponent will be Paul Ciorasou of Mississippi, who came into the tourney as the 16th and final seed, but was upset in the first round. The match should be a dandy and starts at 9:00 a.m. central standard time.
