No. 3 UCLA Edges Washington State, 2-1 in OT

LOS ANGELES - UCLA sophomore midfielder Jill Oakes netted a golden goal in the third minute of overtime Thursday, lifting the third-ranked women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Washington State in the Pac-10 opener for both schools at Drake Stadium. With the victory UCLA improves to 8-1-2 overall and 1-0 in Pac-10 play. Washington State falls to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

With the score tied 1-1 in overtime, Bruin freshman Mary Castelanelli dribbled down the right side and sent a ball into the Washington State box. The ball was one-touched by Oakes, hitting it past Cougar goalkeeper Katie Hutlin for the game winner. The goal was scored just 2:32 into the first overtime period.

In regulation, UCLA got on the board first, scoring in the 60th minute on a goal by Bruin sophomore Iris Mora. Mora, who bent the ball in off a corner kick, leads the Bruins in scoring with 13 points. Thursday's goal was her fourth of the season.

Following Mora's goal, Washington State tied the game in the 75th minute when Shelby Brownfield blasted a 20-yard shot over the hands of an outstretched Arianna Criscione. Criscione played the entire match in goal for UCLA and finished with two saves on the evening.

UCLA outshot Washington State, 17-4 and owned an 11-0 advantage on corner kicks.

The Bruins get a day off before returning to the field this Saturday to host No. 9 Washington at Drake Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
