Three Cardinal Advance to Second Round of Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Stanford's Alice Barnes, Erin Burdette and Lauren Barnikow each won their first round matches on Thursday at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships to advance to second-round action on Friday.

Barnes, seeded No. 5, downed Arizona's Dianne Hollands in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (5). The Cardinal sophomore will face Tammy Encina of Tennessee on Friday. Stanford junior Burdette took the win against Daniela Alvarez of Clemson after Alvarez retired due to injury in the second set (6-3, 1-0 ret). Burdette will come up against Jennifer McGaffigan of Illinois in the second round.

Senior Barnikow defeated Old Dominion's Nataly Cahana in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) and will take on California's Raquel Kops-Jones in second-round action.

In the doubles competition, the Cardinal pairing of Burdette and Barnikow fell 8-5 to Duke's Amanda Johnson and Tory Zawacki to drop out of competition.
