Cornejo's First Career Score Lifts OSU Over Stanford, 1-0
Oct. 10, 2003
STANFORD, Calif. - - Freshman Carlos Cornejo's first career goal lifted Oregon State to a 1-0 win over Stanford at Maloney Field Friday night in Pacific - 10 men's soccer action.
OSU bumped its record to 8-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Pac -10 play after beating Stanford (2-7-2, 0-2-0) - which competed in the NCAA Championship match last year - for the first time ever at Stanford. The Beavers earned their first win in the series since a 1995 win in Corvallis.
The scoring sequence started when Robbie Findley stripped a Stanford player of the ball at midfield and laid it off to Ryan Johnson in the middle. Johnson then found Cornejo, who bent a shot under the crossbar from 25 yards out.
Johnson, who is currently leading the nation in assists, now has 11 for the season and is tied for OSU's career lead in assists with 16.
OSU limited the Cardinal to only two shots while firing eight of its own. The Beavers also had four breakaways that did not find the back of the net.
'Stanford has to be the best 2-7-2 team in the nation,' said Beavers head Coach Dana Taylor. 'I have talked with several coaches who have played Stanford and they said that this year has been quite unlucky for them.
'I felt that from back to front, our defense played a very solid game. Even though Peter Billmeyer didn't record any saves, he did a great job of breaking up several Stanford scoring threats.'
OSU has now shut out its last two Pac-10 opponents; the Beavers topped Fresno State 4-0 on Oct. 5.
The Beavers tackle California in Berkeley on Sunday at 2 p.m. The next home game for the Beavers will be Sunday, Oct. 19th at 1p.m. when they host Northwest rival No. 8 Washington.
