Cougars Fall To Beavers In Four
Oct. 10, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State Beavers defeated the Washington State Cougars 30-24, 30-21, 25-30, 30-21 in Pacific-10 Conference volleyball action Friday night at Gill Coliseum.
WSU is now 6-11 overall, 2-5 in Pac-10 play, while Oregon State moves to 12-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Zanda Bautre (15 kills, 16 digs) and Kristen Carlson (11 kills, 13 digs) registered double-doubles for WSU. Megan Camp and Jessie Camp hit double-digits in digs as well for the Cougars recording 17 and 12, respectively. Allison Lawrence led Oregon State with a double-double of 18 kills and 19 digs.
Neither team could amount much of an offense throughout the match but the Cougars especially struggled recording a .016 hitting percentage including a -.022 mark through the first two games. Conversely, OSU tallied a .137 hitting percentage in the match.
After dropping the first two games the Cougars recovered to get back into the match in game three.
Despite falling behind early, the Cougars used runs of 7-2 and 6-0 to open a 19-11 advantage in the third game. Although the Beavers tried to rally -- OSU closed to within two points on five separate occasions -- the Cougars took game three 30-25.
It looked as if WSU would carry over its momentum from the third game to the fourth. The Cougars opened game four with four consecutive points but OSU responded with seven straight points of its own. Although WSU would manage to get within two on three instances OSU would not relinquish its lead for the remainder of the game.
The Cougars return to action at Oregon, Saturday at 7 p.m.
