No. 18 Cal Falls to No. 22 ASU, 3-2, in Pac-10 Opener
Oct. 10, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 18 California rallied from a two-goal deficit only to lose to No. 22 Arizona State, 3-2, in both teams' Pac-10 opener Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Golden Bears, who entered the game having allowed six goals all season, dropped to 5-3-3 (0-1 Pac-10), while the Sun Devils improved to 7-2-2 (1-0 Pac-10).
ASU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Elizabeth Bogus in the 33rd minute and Stephanie Ebner in the 52nd.
After a period of sustained pressure, Ratican turned provider in the 82nd minute when she slid the ball to teammate Kimberly Yokers, who unleashed a drive from 30 yards beyond the reach of ASU goalkeeper Kim Bingham. The goal was Yokers' second of 2003.
With less than three minute to play in regulation, Ebner scored a second long distance strike, this time taking a pass from Bogus and hitting a shot from 25 yards that beat the Bears' Anna Key for the game winner.
Cal looks to get back on track against Arizona Sunday at 1 p.m.
