Q & A With Sean Deacon
Oct. 10, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore.- - Sean Deacon, the lone senior and captain of the OSU men's golf team, has played a major part in his team's success over the last four years. Not only is he among the statistical team leaders this season, but also is among the top ten in many all-time statistical categories, including low round, low three-round score, and season scoring average. In a recent interview, Sean explains the value of his experience, his thoughts on his talented new teammates, and his expectations of his team's and his future.
HAS YOUR PLAY THUSFAR BEEN AS GOOD AS YOU HAD HOPED?
'No, not quite. Basically I had my worst finish at our tournament that I've had since coming here. I've played all right, just had that one bad final round. I played decent at the Husky. I struggled a little hitting the ball, but my short game was good. So far, just ok.'
DO YOU THINK THE TEAM HAS 'GELLED' WELL THIS YEAR WITH THE ADDITION OF A FEW VERY TALENTED FRESHMEN?
'We're really, really young, so our first tournament we had four guys who had never played in a tournament before and the last tournament we had four guys traveling who had never been to a tournament before. Considering we've been in contention to win both of them, it's been a good transition for these guys coming in and they're young and they're learning. So far so good.'
THE TEAM HAS PUT ITSELF IN POSITION TO WIN AFTER TWO ROUNDS, BUT FAILED TO CONVERT. WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN FOR YOU GUYS TO GET OVER THAT HURDLE?
'I just keep telling the guys, and so does coach, that we just need to keep getting ourselves there. The first tournament you get into contention as an individual you don't necessarily win, but once you finally win it just goes from there.'
HOW HAS YOUR ROLE CHANGED OVER THE YEARS SINCE YOU'VE BEEN HERE?
'This year I'm the captain, so I have to do all the right things to lead these younger guys.'
DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE A LOT MORE RESPONSIBILITY?
'I do, I do. I feel like I want to show them the right things to do because obviously I've been here for four years now and so they think that I know what I'm supposed to do, so I should at least do what I think I'm supposed to do.'
IS THERE ANY SPECIFIC ADVICE YOU GIVE THE OTHER PLAYERS ON AND OFF THE COURSE?
'On the course, I let them do their own thing. They've gotten themselves here so they don't need me telling them what to do. If they have questions about how to play a hole or anything like that, I'm more than happy to help them. Off the course, if they have any questions they can come and ask me but so far I think they've all adapted to everything.'
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CLUB?
'[Laughs] Probably my 7-iron. Me and my buddy always joke about my 'lucky seven'.'
AND YOUR FAVORITE COURSE?
'I'd say this golf course over in Ireland called Waterville that we played when we went over there after my freshman year. We went over to play a match but it was more of just a fun thing to do.'
WAS IT WINDY?
'Oh yeah, every day.'
DOES THE TEAM HANG OUT TOGETHER OFF THE COURSE?
'Yeah, not a lot, but we do. It's changed a little. Six of us used to live in a house a couple years ago and then they all left so it's kind of spread out a little bit. For me, since I'm so much older than all of them, I don't feel like they feel they can hang out with me. We do hang out every now and again and go to lunch.'
DO YOU EVER HAVE FRIENDLY COMPETITIONS?
'Yeah, we always play games.'
DO YOU USUALLY WIN?
'Yeah, I usually win [laughing].'
NOW ON TO OTHER SUBJECTS. WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR AND WHAT DO YOU INTEND ON DOING WITH IT?
'I'm a business major with the option of finance in international business. I don't know what I'm going to do yet.'
IS IT YOUR DREAM TO JOIN THE PGA TOUR?
'It used to be, but I think now I'm ready to get a job and start my life.'
SO WHAT'S IN YOUR CD PLAYER RIGHT NOW?
'A band called O.A.R, Of a Revolution. They're just like an alternative band, no one really knows about them. Also, Coldplay and Dave Matthews.'
WHAT TV SHOW DO YOU NEVER MISS?
'[Laughing] I miss a lot of them because I'm always gone doing something. I hate missing 'Friends', but that's about it. That's the only show that I feel bad about if I miss.'
