LOS ANGELES - After being pushed three long sets by Stanford's Lauren Barnikow on Friday morning, Raquel Kops-Jones had to survive another scare late Friday evening to stay alive at the ITA All-American Championships.
Kops-Jones, currently the third-ranked player in the nation and the #2 seed in the tournament, beat a nagging Barnikow 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, to start out a trying yet successful weekend.
She then went on to drop the first set in the quarterfinal, 2-6, to Florida's Alexis Gordon, but luckily found her stroke late. Kops-Jones rallied to pull out the second set 7-6, then composed herself to win the third set 6-4.
On Saturday, Kops-Jones put Friday behing her by defeating Julie Coin of Clemson in the semifinals by a decisive (6-3,6-2) margin.
Her victory sets up a Bay Area clash against Stanford's Erin Burdette, who earned her way to the final by defeating #1 seed Agata Cioroch of Georgia.
In other action - after three impressive victories in a row, Catherine Lynch fell on Saturday to Suzana Maksovic of Denver (6-2,6-7,7-5) in the consolation semifinals.
