Cal's Mia Jerkov Named Both National and Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week
Oct. 13, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, CA - California junior Mia Jerkov has been selected both Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week and Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Oct. 5-12. It is the second national player of the week honor of Jerkov's career and third Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Jerkov this season (Sept. 8, Sept. 29). It is also the fifth Pac-10 Player of the Week honor all-time for Jerkov - more than any other active Pac-10 player.
A 6-3 outside hitter from Split, Croatia, Jerkov led the Bears (16-0, 7-0) - now nationally ranked fifth in the nation - to 3-2 victories over No. 14 Santa Clara and No. 4 Stanford last week at Haas Pavilion. Against the Broncos, she had a team-high 34 kills, 18 digs and three service aces. Versus the Cardinal, Jerkov had 31 kills, a .357 hitting percentage (31 kills, 11 errors, 56 attempts), four service aces and 12 digs. She finished the week with 65 kills, seven service aces and 30 digs in wins against two ranked opponents. Jerkov also recorded 30 or more kills for the ninth and 10th time in her career and now has over 1,000 career kills (1,030) in 53 matches. It was the second time in Jerkov's career she has had back-to-back 30 kill matches as well.
The Bears win over Stanford had several implications. It was the first time Cal had defeated Stanford since Oct. 1, 1982 and it broke a streak of 40 straight losses to the Cardinal. It was also the first time the Bears had defeated Stanford in Pac-10 Conference play. Cal's win over the Cardinal keeps the Bears in first place in the conference standings.
The Bears also had an attendance of 3,021, the largest volleyball crowd in school history. Cal had a crowd of 3,125 on Oct. 15, 1999, but it was prior to the men's and women's basketball team's Midnight Madness.
The Bears will next host No. 11 UCLA (13-3, 5-2), Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. Cal has never defeated UCLA in women's volleyball (0-44) and one of the Bears' players, senior Ashleigh Turner, mother (Linda Lehde) played on UCLA's 1974 AIAW National Championship team
On Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at Haas, Cal takes on No. 1 ranked, undefeated and defending NCAA champion USC (16-0, 7-0). Last season (Oct. 15), the Bears took the Trojans to five games at Haas Pavilion. Cal has a 6-32 all-time record against USC, last defeating the Trojans, 3-2, Nov. 15, 1991 at Cal. The Bears have lost 22 straight to USC.
