Amy LePeilbet Named Pac-10 Soccer Player Of The Week
Oct. 14, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State senior defender Amy LePeilbet has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 7-13, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday. This is LePeilbet's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and ASU's seventh weekly honor all-time.
LePeilbet, from Crystal Lake, Ill., scored the game-winning goal on a 55-yard free kick to beat Stanford, 1-0. Against Cal, LePeilbet was at the center of an ASU defense that held California to only seven shots. The goal was also LePeilbet's third on the year and second game-winner, setting a career high for the preseason Soccer America All-American and U.S. U-21 National Team defender.
LePeilbet scored on an incredible 55-yard free kick that carried Arizona State to a 1-0 shutout victory over Stanford. The win also marks the first time in school's eight-year history that the Sun Devils swept the California/Stanford series. LePeilbet, also the team's top marking back, helped to lead the team to its sixth shutout of the year.
In the 38th minute of action, a Stanford player committed a foul on a Sun Devil just inside the Stanford half. That set up LePeilbet's free kick. As she lofted the ball toward the box, the Stanford goalkeeper came out to attempt the catch, but the ball went over her head and through her fingers as it found the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal.
Against California, LePeilbet again was a main factor in helping the ASU defense stop the Bears late in the game, and contain them to only seven shots, for only the second in win the series and first win since the 1999 season.
Arizona State improves to 8-2-2 overall/2-0 in the Pac-10 Conference and is ranked 24th in this week's NSCAA/Adidas and Soccer America polls.
