Stanford Faces No. 3 UCLA and USC at Maloney Field

Season Update ...Stanford opened Pac-10 action with a 1-1 split at Arizona and Arizona State last weekend. Senior co-captain Allyson Marquand led the Cardinal to a 3-2 victory over Arizona after tallying all three of the Stanford goals, including the game-winner at 64:47. Marquand continues to lead the squad with six goals and 41 shot attempts. The Cardinal have tallied a 6-6-1 overall record and stand at 2-4 at Maloney Field this season. Stanford has out shot its opponents 187-86 in 2003, while scoring 1.12 goals per game.
Fox Sports Net ...The Stanford-UCLA match-up on Oct. 17 will be broadcast on tape delay by Fox Sports Net on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. and on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. On-air talent will include Tracy Milburn and Allen Hopkins.
National Rankings ...UCLA is ranked No. 3 in this week's NSCAA, Soccer Buzz, Soccer America and Soccer Times national polls. USC is currently ranked No. 18 by Soccer America and No. 22 by Soccer Times. Stanford is not ranked.
Scouting UCLA ...The Bruins boast a 9-1-2 record this season. UCLA opened conference play last weekend at home with two wins in overtime over Washington State (W, 2-1 OT) and Washington (W, 3-2 2OT) at UCLA's Drake Stadium. Seniors Whitney Jones and Sarah-Gayle Swanson lead the squad with five goals each. Freshman Bristyn Davis holds the team lead with 37 shot attempts this season, followed by sophomores Stacy Lindstrom with 31 and Iris Mora with 30. The Bruins have outscored their opponents 26-12 and have averaged 2.04 goals per game in 2003. UCLA has also outshot its opponents 254-67.
Cardinal-Bruin Series ...The all-time Cardinal-Bruin series stands tied at 5-5-1. In their last meeting, Stanford took a 1-0 victory over then No. 12-ranked UCLA at Maloney Field on Oct. 13, 2002. Cardinal Callie Withers scored the lone goal of the match.
Scouting USC ...The Trojans improved their season record to 5-4-4 (1-0-1 Pac-10) after a 1-0 win over Washington State and a 1-1 double overtime tie with Washington last weekend. Freshman Rosa Anna Tantillo registered the game-winning goal against the Cougars and leads USC with six goals and 37 shot attempts. The Trojans have averaged 12.5 shots and 1.30 goals per game in 2003. Goalkeeper Julie Peterson has tallied five shutouts and 37 saves this season. USC head coach Jim Millinder needs one more victory to reach the 100-win mark during his eight-year tenure with the Trojans.
Cardinal-Trojan Series ...USC leads the all-time Cardinal-Trojan series 7-2-1. In their last meeting on Oct. 11, 2002, Stanford shutout the then 15th-ranked Trojans 2-0 at Maloney Field.
Movin' On Up ...All-American goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart is now tied for third in the Cardinal record books after notching her 26th career shutout against St. Mary's. Last season, Barnhart set single-season Cardinal records in minutes played (2,047), total shutouts (18), goals allowed (4) and goals against average (0.189).
Up Next ...The Cardinal return to Pac-10 action on the road as they face Oregon at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 and Oregon State at 1 p.m. on Oct. 26.
