Cal Competes at NCAA Pre-National Meet

CAL COMPETES AT PRE-NATIONALS: After two weeks off from competition, the California men's and women's cross country teams travel to the NCAA Pre-National Meet Saturday, Oct. 18, at Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course in Waterloo, IA. The day begins with the men's 8000m race, which will be staged in a purple (11 a.m. CT) and gold section (11:40 a.m. CT) The Golden Bears are slotted in the gold section. The women's 6000m race also has two sections, with Cal racing in the purple one at 12:20 p.m. CT.

A LOOK AT THE FIELD: The men's gold field includes 16 teams ranked in the top 30 nationally, including No. 3 Northern Arizona, No. 5 Colorado, No. 7 Iona and No. 10 Ohio State. The women's purple field includes 12 teams ranked in the top 35, including No. 1 BYU, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 8 Georgetown and No. 9 North Carolina.

A LOOK AT THE CAL LINEUP: The Cal men's lineup features Girmay Guangul, Carlos Carballo, Giliat Ghebray, Kevin Davis, Jonathan Balzer, Eric Roberts, Ozzie Pina, David Torrence, Abadir Barre and Tom Allen. Representing the Bears women's team are Bridget Duffy, Lindsey Maclise, Maja Ruznic, Abby Parker, Pippa Macdonald, Samantha Jones, Elizabeth Mayeda, Lisa Sandoval and Eva Markiewicz.

BEARS HAVE STRONG SHOWING AT NOTRE DAME: The Cal women placed ninth with 239 points, and the men took 10th with 253 points at the 48th-annual Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 3. Against many nationally-ranked teams, sophomore Bridget Duffy led Cal with a ninth-place showing with a time of 17:51 over the 5000m course. Junior Girmay Guangul led the Bears' men by finishing sixth in 24:43 over the five-mile course. Senior Carlos Carballo (14th, 24:58) and freshman Christy Borak (33rd, 18:15) were the next fastest Cal runners.

GHEBRAY WINS SAN FRANCISCO STATE INVITE: Sophomore Giliat Ghebray won the San Francisco State Invitational 8000m race Oct. 4. The sophomore, who won the Maximum Results Invitational earlier in the season, crossed the finish line in a time of 25:22.4. He easily defeated second-place Tom Getchell of Sacramento State (25:50.0). Junior Chloe Jarvis led the Cal women in 31st place (24:14.7).

DUFFY, GUANGUL LEADING THE PACK: Bridget Duffy and Girmay Guangul have emerged as the leaders of the 2003 Cal cross country program. Duffy, who hails from Oakland, Calif., has paced the Bears in three of four competitions this season and in eight of nine events since arriving on campus in 2002. Guangul redshirted the 2002 season and has returned strong this year. The San Jose, Calif., product has been Cal's top finisher in each of his two races in 2003, winning the Strawberry Canyon Challenge Run and grabbing sixth at Notre Dame. Gilliat Ghebray (Union City, CA) and Carlos Carballo (Cathedral City, CA) also have finished in the top 15 in each of their races this year.
