Keflezighi Top American Finisher At Chicago Marathon

On Sunday (Oct. 12), UCLA distance great Meb Keflezighi was the highest placing American runner at the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, placing seventh.

Keflezighi, who won four NCAA distance championships in his Bruin career (1995-98), covered the marathon course in 2:10.03 (Olympic 'A' standard), placing seventh. The Top American female was Colleen DeReuck, who also placed seventh (2:28.01, Olympic 'A' standard). The men's winner was Kenya's Evans Rutto (2:05.50) and the women's winner was Russia's Svetlana Zakharova (2:23.07).

With his performance, Keflezighi joins fellow U. S. runners Khalid Khannouchi, Alan Culpepper and Dan Browne as Americans who have met the 'A' standard for the upcoming 2004 Olympic Marathon.
