Oct. 16, 2003

SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington men's tennis heads to Eugene, Ore., this week for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals hosted by the University of Oregon at the Student Tennis Center, Friday-Monday, Oct. 17-20. Matches are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. all four days.

Nine schools and 64 players are entered to compete in the four-day tournament, including eight singles players and four doubles teams from Washington. Joining the Huskies will be athletes from Stanford, California, Oregon, Gonzaga, Hawaii, Portland, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara. Individually, seven singles players ranked in the Top-100 ITA Preseason Rankings will compete, as well as one ranked doubles team - the Husky pair of junior Alex Vlaski and freshman Alex Slovic (ranked 35th).

Slovic, ranked 95th nationally, is the Huskies' highest seeded singles player at No. 6, while freshman Daniel Chu and junior Christoph Palamanshofer are No. 9 seeds. Slovic and Vlaski are the top-seeded doubles pair, while Chu and senior Nick Weiss are a fifth-seeded team.

The singles finalists and the doubles champion from this weekend's event will earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan, Nov. 6-9. Vlaski, who is coming off a national singles title at last week's ITA All-American Championships, is already a qualifier for the ITA National Indoors and will not compete in singles in Eugene.

First round singles matchups on Friday include Chu facing Francisco Zepponi (Santa Clara) at 8 a.m., freshman Mike Ricks against Dean Wallace (Cal) at 8 a.m., freshman Chris Floyd versus Patrick Briaud (Cal) at 9:15 a.m. and Palmanshofer against John Pettit (Cal) at 10:45 am. The bottom half of the singles bracket features Slovic versus Ben Hidalgo (Santa Clara) at 12:15 p.m., junior Scott Felsenthal against Peter Miskovic (Portland) at 12:15 p.m., junior Peter Scharler facing Chris King (Oregon) at 1:45 p.m. and Weiss versus Andreas Peterson (Cal) at 1:45 p.m.

Slovic and Vlaski have a first round bye in the doubles bracket and will face either Jake Leivent/Kuni Minato (Cal) or Bobby Rasmussen/Zepponi (Santa Clara) in the second round on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. Other first round doubles action on Friday features Felsenthal and Ricks versus Taylor Bedilion and Kevin McQuaid (Santa Clara) at 4:45 p.m., Chu and Weiss versus Ted Blosser and Hidalgo (Santa Clara) at 4:45 p.m., and Palmanshofer and Scharler versus Martin Marechal and Andre Sion (St. Mary's) at 5:45 p.m.

Last year at the ITA Regionals, UW senior Matt Hanlin was crowned the regional singles champion after fellow teammate, Vlaski, withdrew from the all-Husky final. The UW doubles team of Vlaski and senior Ari Strasberg advanced as far as the semifinals before falling to eventual regional champions K.C. Corkery and James Pade from Stanford.
