Volleyball Drops Five-Game Match to No. 7 Stanford

STANFORD, CA - The 11th-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team played its fifth five-game match of the season on Thursday night at Stanford, falling to the Cardinal three games to two. Game scores were 28-30, 24-30, 30-28, 30-24, 15-11. Brynn Murphy led the Bruins with 19 kills as junior setter Krystal McFarland recorded a career-high 65 assists. UCLA falls to 13-4 (5-3 Pac-10) while the Cardinal improves to 14-3 (7-1 Pac-10).
The Bruins turned in a solid performance in the opening game of the match with Murphy and Heather Cullen each turning in a team-high five kills. Cullen's fifth kill of the game ended the opening-game win for the Bruins with a 30-28 win.
In game two, UCLA hit .306 as a team. Brittany Ringel led the way offensively for the Bruins, hitting .625 with six kills on eight attempts with just one error. Murphy also turned in an error-free game with five kills on six swings for an .833 individual attack percentage as UCLA took a two games to none lead to the locker rooms with a 30-24 game two victory.
Games three and four mirrored the first two games of the match, as Stanford won those games by scored of 30-28 and 30-24. In game three, Stanford took an early 4-1 lead and had a 15-11 lead at the media timeout after a UCLA hitting error. The Bruins would storm back, however, tying the game at 20-20 and forcing Stanford into a timeout. Stanford took its final time out trailing 27-25, but scored four consecutive points before a Cardinal block sealed the 30-28 win.
In game four, the Cardinal again held a 15-11 lead at the media timeout, but UCLA closed the gap to two points before Stanford extended its lead to 24-19, and would force a fifth and deciding game with a 30-24 game four win.
Stanford took an early 7-4 lead in game five, forcing a UCLA time out after a Bruin hitting error. The Cardinal extended its lead to 12-9 after switching sides and would close out the win on a Kristin Richards kill to win game five 15-9.
Brittany Ringel posted a season-high 13 kills in the match for the Bruins and was joined in double-figure kills by teammate Brynn Murphy's team-high 19 kills, 16 kills from Heather Cullen and 10 kills from freshman Colby Lyman. Sophomore Haley Jorgensborg came off of the bench to post a season-high two service aces, while Murphy recorded a season-high eight blocks (one solo, seven assists) as UCLA out-blocked the Cardinal 15-11.
UCLA returns to action on Friday night, October 17, at fifth-ranked California. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm in Berkeley, CA.
