Bears to Compete at Head of the Charles
Oct. 17, 2003
BERKELEY - The Cal men's crew team gets a chance to unveil its young talent this weekend at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. The prestigious rowing event will set the Bears against many of the top collegiate programs, including Harvard, Princeton and Brown, along with the U.S. and Canadian national teams.
The Bears' squad, consisting mostly of underclassmen, was invited to compete in the Championship 8+ and the Championship 4+ events on Sunday, Oct. 19. Seniors Shawn Ghatan, Robert Austerman and Max Frasca will lead the Bears as the experienced members of the Varsity 8 boat.
As opposed to collegiate events in the spring season - in which the first boat that reaches 2,000 meters wins - the victor of this weekend's competition will be determined by the boat that completes the course in the fastest time. The Bears were picked to hold the second starting position in the Championship 4+ division, and the ninth position in the Championship 8+ division. These earlier starts will allow Cal to have a clear path on the Charles River, without the obstacles of numerous preceding boats.
The Bears travel to the East Coast Thursday night in preparation for their competitive debut Sunday.
'We are all really excited for the year to start,' team captain Ghatan said. 'This preseason event will give us a chance to be seen and let everyone know that Cal's out there.'
