No. 21 Cal Edged By No. 18 USC, 1-0

Oct. 17, 2003

BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 21 California had its chances, but in the end lost to No. 18 USC, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears, who had played their last six games on the road, drop to 6-4-3 (1-2 Pac-10), while the Trojans improve to 6-4-4 (2-0-1 Pac-10).

USC forward Tina Sutorius scored the game's only goal in the ninth minute. She ran onto a serve from defender Jocelyn Leche and beat Cal freshman goalkeeper Anna Key from about 15 yards for her second goal of the season.

The Trojans held a 7-5 edge on shots in the first half, and the Bears also garnered a 7-5 shot advantage in the second half. The overall shots were tied, but Cal held a 7-5 lead in shots on goal.

One of Cal's best chances to tie the game in the second half came on a free kick from senior midfielder Kimberly Yokers from the right side. Yokers sent the ball to sophomore forward Tracy Hamm who one-timed the ball for a shot on goal but directly at USC goalkeeper Julie Peterson. Hamm led the Bears with four shots off the bench.

Key made four saves for the Bears, and Peterson tallied five. USC's defense also blocked two of Cal's shots on goal. The Bears started five freshmen for the second straight game today.

Cal, which lost at home for the first time this season today, looks to earn a weekend split against No. 3 UCLA Sunday at 1 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
