Q&A With Christie Spear Of The WSU Soccer Team

Oct. 17, 2003

Spear is a 5-5 junior midfielder from Bend, Ore. She is a movement studies major. Spear has started all 12 matches for the Cougs in 2003 and contributed an assist to Cailan McCutchan in WSU's 1-0 victory over New Mexico.

Q: Why did you choose WSU over other universities recruiting you?A: 'I came on my recruiting trip and I loved the campus. But, the most significant thing was the girls on the team; I could see myself getting along with everyone and really fitting in.'

Q: Why did you choose movement studies as a major?A: 'Because it is related to health and fitness which are areas of interest to me.'

Q: When you're done with your undergraduate career at WSU, what do you want to do?A: 'Probably go to graduate school, to delay going into the real world as long as possible.'

Q: What are some personal goals you have for the season?A: 'To play the best I can every game; to do my job to the best of my ability so that my team can be successful. I just take it game-by-game and try to do my best.'

Q: How many people are in your family?A: 'I'm the youngest. I have two older brothers, Travis who is 22 and Jason who is 29. I also have an older sister. Travis used to beat me up everyday and I would fight with my brothers all the time.'

Q: What are some of your favorite movies or TV shows?A: 'The reality TV shows because they're so stupid. I like the Bachelor because I like the cat fights and watching the girls backstab each other. It's hilarious.'

Q: Playing a collegiate sport takes a lot of time and energy and it's a big commitment. What is your motivation to play? A: 'Soccer is a passion I have and playing for my teammates is one of the highs of my life.'

Q: Are there any superstitions you have or the team has?A: 'I don't believe in superstitions because it would freak me out if I didn't do it, but there are some girls that are crazy and have to follow the same routine every time they do something.'

Q: If I was interviewing your teammates what would they say about you?A: 'They'd say I'm amazing and perfect in every way,' Spear said laughing. 'No, I'm just kidding, they'd probably say I like to have fun and laugh a lot. I like to dance and make other people laugh and have fun too. I hope they'd say I care a lot about my friends and that I would do anything for them.'
