Stanford Men And Women Cruise To Victory at Pre-NCAA Nationals

Waterloo, Ia - The top-ranked Stanford men's cross country team and the second-ranked Cardinal women raced to easy victories over many of the nation's top teams on Saturday at the Pre-NCAANationals at the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course.

The Cardinal men, the defending NCAA champions, tallied 25 points, 70 points better than runnerup Iona College. Six of Stanford's top seven runners finished in the Top 10. Ryan Hall, a sophomore, finished second over 8,000 meters in a time of 23:11.7. Ian Dobson placed fourth (23:19.7), Donald Sage was fifth (23:32.2), Louis Luchini finished sixth (23:32.2), Seth Hejny placed eighth (23:37.4) while Adam Tenforde was ninth (23:43.3).

Stanford competed against 34 other teams, including #4 Brigham Young, #6 Central Michigan, #10 Iona, #13 Michigan, #16 Virginia, #18 Villanova, #23 Portland, #24 Cal Poly, #25 Indiana and #27 Texas A & M.

In the men's open race (8,000 meters), Brett Gotcher won the race over 108 other runners in a time of 24:35.8.

The Stanford women also scored a sizable victory over 6,000 meters. Stanford collected 66 points compared to 101 for runnerup North Carolina State. Stanford had three runners in the top 5,including a victory for Alicia Craig in a time of 19:52.6. Sara Bei finished a close second (19:52.8) while Arianna Lambie was fifth (20:13.6).

This meet served as a prelude to the NCAA Men's and Women's Division I Championships on the same course on Nov. 24. Northern Iowa will serve as the host school. Thirty-one men's and women's teams, plus several individuals, will compete for national titles. Stanford's men's team won the NCAA title last year while the Cardinal women placed second behind Brigham Young.

Stanford also sent another group of runners to the Cal Poly Invitational, and the Cardinal came away with a victory. Stanford chalked up 21 points to beat six other teams including runnerup Cal Poly (40 points) Four Stanford runners finished in the top 10 led by Jacob Gomez in second place (25:51.1) over 8,000 meters. David Vidal finished third (25:57.4), Jonathan Pierce was fifth (26:08.0) while Isaac Hawkins placed eighth (26:19.8).
