USC Men Defeat Irish In Preseason Exhibition
Oct. 17, 2003
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - After enduring a season hindered by injury and hardship, the USC men's tennis team seems to be back into good shape heading into 2004. The team's strength showed Friday afternoon as the Trojans defeated Notre Dame, 5-2, in an exhibition match at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in South Bend, Ind.
'It was great to have all the components of a team out on the court, and thatwas even with a few our team members missing,' said USC head coach Peter Smith. 'We feel that this is a start to a great year for our Trojan tennis team.'
The Trojans won the doubles point and four-of-six singles matches to take the preseason victory. A total of 12 matches were played, but only the top six singles matches and top three doubles matches counted for points.
Because the Notre Dame and USC women's tennis teams played concurrently, the men's match featured Nos. 4, 5, and 6 singles first, followed by Nos. 1, 2, and 3 doubles, and finally, Nos. 1, 2, and 3 singles. The Trojans held a 2-1 lead after the first wave of matches, including wins by Drew Hoskins at No. 4 and Brian Wright at No. 5. Hoskins defeated Notre Dame's Barry King 7-5, 6-3, while Wright posted a three-set win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, over Ryan Keckley.
Switching to doubles, USC opened with a win at the top spot as Johan Berg and Daniel Langre defeated 50th-ranked Matthew Scott and Brent D'Amico, 8-5. Despite a loss at No. 3, the Trojans clinched the doubles point when Hoskins and Wright combined for an 8-6 victory over Keckley and Luis Haddock on court two.
USC wasted no time in clinching the victory, as Langre easily defeated the 64th-ranked Haddock, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. Then, with the match in hand, Berg added the final point, outlasting Notre Dame's Scott 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 6-2 at center court.
The exhibition match between the schools on the eve of their meeting in football in Notre Dame Stadium is a tradition that dates back to 1989. USC has won five of the six contests.
The Trojan continue preseason play when they host the ITA Western Region Individual Championship next week, Oct. 22-26, at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
