Huskies To Battle In Both Singles and Doubles Finals At ITA Regionals

EUGENE, ORE - Washington men's tennis freshman Alex Slovic advanced tothe finals in both singles and doubles in the third day of the ITA RegionalChampionships hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore., Sunday.Slovic, along with doubles partner Alex Vlaski, will compete for regional titles on Monday.

By advancing to Monday's regional singles final, Slovic has earned a spot inthe singles draw of ITA National Indoor Championships, held Nov. 6-9 at theUniversity of Michigan. Should Slovic and Vlaski win the regional doublestitle, they would also land a spot at National Indoors. Vlaski already secured his spot in the singles draw by winning the All-American Championship singles title.

Sixth-seeded Slovic defeated Sven Swinnen from Oregon in the quarterfinals,7-5, 7-5(1), before earning a win over second-seeded Sam Warburg from Stanford when Warburg withdrew from the semifinal match due to illness. Slovic won the first set 6-1 and game two was tied 4-4 when Warburg retired.Slovic will face top-seed Conor Niland from Cal in the finals, Monday at 10 a.m.

Slovic and Vlaski won their quarterfinal match over Tyler Browne and Dean Wallace from Cal, 8-3, before toppling Arron Spencer and Swinnen from Oregon in the semifinals, 9-8(2). Slovic and Vlaski will face Gernot Fischer and Eric Kochanski from Santa Clara in the doubles final, Monday at 12 p.m.

Other Huskies competing Sunday, included junior Christoph Palmanshofer who won his quarterfinal match over fifth-seed James Pade from Stanford, 6-3, 6-2, before falling in the semifinals to top-seed Niland, 6-2, 6-2.

Two Huskies are still playing in the consolation singles bracket with junior Scott Felsenthal and freshman Chris Floyd winning a pair of matches, Sunday, to advance to the semifinals on Monday.

The ITA Regionals continue through Mon., Oct. 20, with the singles finalistsand the doubles champion advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan, Nov. 6-9.
