No. 21 Cal Nipped by No. 3 UCLA, 1-0

Oct. 19, 2003

BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 21 California outplayed No. 3 UCLA in the second half only to lose 1-0 to the Bruins Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium in front of 1186 fans.

'Today as a whole we played pretty well,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'It took us awhile to get going. I'm not sure if we were testing the waters or if it was that we got scored on and got motivated to get something done. I thought we played well in the second half. We just didn't put one away. We got some great chances.'

Sarah-Gayle Swanson tallied the game's only goal in the 13th minute on a set piece. Nandi Pryce sent a free kick into Cal's penalty area, and Swanson headed the ball off the far post and into the Bears' net.

UCLA (10-1-3, 3-0-1 Pac-10) held a 6-3 shot advantage in the first half. Cal freshman forward Katie Ratican had two great opportunities to tie the game before the break. The first was on a free kick from outside the box that the Bruins' goalkeeper Sarah Lombardo saved, and the other one came on a one-v-one opportunity, where Lombardo smothered the ball before Ratican could get the shot off.

In the second half, Cal (6-5-3, 1-3 Pac-10) held the majority of the possession and outshot UCLA, 8-4, with sophomore forward Tracy Hamm mounting several of the Bears' most dangerous chances in the final 20 minutes. In the 70th minute, Hamm had a goal waved off for a foul, and had two other shots saved in the final 10 minutes by Bruins' reserve goalkeeper Arianna Criscione. Lombardo was injured in the 77th minute while attempting to make a save.

'We were so much more dangerous in the last 20 minutes,' said Boyd. 'It's got to happen the whole time.'

Cal looks to break a two-game losing streak when they travel to Oregon next weekend. Friday, Oct. 24, the Bears face Oregon State at 3 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 26, they battle Oregon at 1 p.m.
