Oregon State Hands Seventh-Ranked Huskies 3-1 Loss
Oct. 19, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State (10-4-0, 4-1-0 Pac-10) scored three first-half goals, including two by senior Alan Gordon, as the Beavers handed seventh-ranked Washington men's soccer (8-2-2, 2-2-1 Pac-10) a 3-1 upset in Corvallis, Ore., Sunday afternoon. It marked just the second loss of the season for the Huskies, who have now lost three-straight to the Beavers dating back to 2002.
The Huskies found themselves down early, something UW they have not been accustomed to this season after scoring first in eight of its previous 11 matches. Carlos Cornejo put the Beavers on the board in the eighth minute with his third goal of the year.
Then it was Gordon who took over, scoring on a header off a corner kick from Ross Duncan in the 15th minute, before netting his second goal off a throw-in from Evan McNeley in the 32nd minute. The goals were Gordon's 10th and 11th of the season.
The Huskies thwarted any chances of a shutout when senior midfielder Troy Ready scored UW's only goal in the 81st minute, a 15-yard shot from the middle of the box. It was the third goal of the season for Ready, who led the Husky attack with four shots. Junior forward Casey Armstrong, junior midfielder C.J. Klaas and sophomore midfielder Jeff Hoover each added three shots.
Washington outshot Oregon State 23-16, including a 14-7 second-half advantage. UW senior goalkeeper Danny Waltman allowed a season-high three goals, while grabbing six saves. Waltman had allowed just four goals in the previous seven matches leading up to Sunday's contest. OSU goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer tallied seven saves.
Washington's only other loss this season came to top-ranked UCLA, a 1-0 shutout on Oct. 5, in Seattle.
The Huskies will look to get well when they return home and take a break from conference play by hosting cross-state rival Gonzaga, Sun., Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. Washington has an unblemished non-conference record of 6-0-1.
