Cardinal Men Host Nelson Invitational This Weekend

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's golf team is set to host the Nelson Invitational, October 24-26, at the Stanford Golf Course (par 71, 6,835 yards) this weekend in Stanford, Calif. The teams will play 18 holes each day with tee times for the first and second rounds starting at 8 a.m. from the first and 10th tees. The final round will be a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m.

Fifteen teams from around the nation will participate in the tournament: Colorado, Colorado State, UC Davis, Duke, Florida Southern, Hawaii-Hilo, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Notre Dame, host-Stanford, Texas Tech, Toledo, USC and Washington.

Duke won the event last year after firing an 11-under par 841 (278-287-276) while Blue Devil Leif Olson was crowned the individual champion with a score of 12-under par 201 (70-66-65).

Competing for the Cardinal will be Blake Mastalir, Kevin Blue, Kyle Gentry, Zack Miller and Matt Shin. Brandon Lawson, Pat Phillips, Scott MacDonald and Matt Savage will play as individuals.

Stanford finished tied for seventh in 2002, turning in a three-round score of 862 (285-293-284). Pat Phillips tied for 68th after recording a 226 (76-77-73) while Blake Mastalir tied for 76th individually with a 228 (76-78-74). Kyle Gentry placed 82nd last year with a 230 (75-82-73) while teammate Scott MacDonald finished 91st, carding a 235 (76-83-76).
