Arizona Men's Tennis Set to Compete in Regional Championships

Omni Hotel Region VIII South Championships: The Arizona men's tennis team will travel to Carson, Calif. to participate in the Omni Hotel Region VIII South Championships, Oct. 23-26. This will be the second ITA tournament of the season for Arizona. Hosted by USC, the tournament will be held for the first time at the Home Depot Center. The tournament will host the top players in the south west including men form USD, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, San Francisco, Pepperdine, Fresno State and Pac-10 foes Arizona State, USC and UCLA.
Qualifying: Arizona will travel ten players this weekend to Carson, Calif. Junior Chris Gessner, sophomore Tim Mullane and freshmen Zach Bromberg and Nate Cochrane are scheduled to compete in the qualifying rounds. All four men competing in the pre-qualifying rounds received a first round bye and will compete Wednesday Oct. 22.
Main Draw: Seniors Carl Hagman and Tom Lloyd, juniors Colin O'Grady and Paul Warkentin and sophomores Daniel Andrus and Roger Matalonga are slated to compete in the main draw for the Cats. Awarded a No. 9-seed, Lloyd is the only Wildcat seeded in the tournament.
Tough Draw: Two Wildcats received draws against seeded opponents. Junior Paul Warkentin is scheduled to face the No. 7-seed Stefan Suta of Fresno State, while sophomore Daniel Andrus will face the No. 6-seed Johan Berg of USC, who is also ranked No. 87 in the pre-season poll.
Double the Trouble: Arizona will compete in doubles for the second time this season at the regional championships. Tom Lloyd and Paul Warkentin, Roger Matalonga and Colin O'Grady, Nate Cochrane and Chris Gessner, and Zach Bromberg and Tim Mullane will pair up to form four doubles teams. It will be the first time that three of these teams have competed together. Matalonga and O'Grady are the only pair to have previously competed as a tandem, earning a 13-7 record last spring. This fall they were scheduled to compete in Midland, Texas, but did not after Matalonga was forced to retire due to injury.
Getting Started: The Regional Championship will be the first opportunity for four Wildcats to compete this season. Freshman Zach Bromberg will be making his first appearance as a Wildcat in the qualifying rounds, while junior Chris Gessner, sophomores Daniel Andrus and Tim Mullane will also be seeing their first action of the fall.
Fall Tournament Review
Midland Collegiate Classic: Senior Tom Lloyd, junior Colin O'Grady and sophomore Roger Matalonga competed in the invitational for Arizona on Oct. 17-18. Lloyd finished the weekend with a 3-1 record, in which all three victories came on the opening day. Lloyd defeated the No. 1-seeded Alejandro Tejerino of Tulsa, 6-3, 3-0 retired. Tejerino was ranked No. 30 in the ITA pre-season poll. O'Grady earned a 2-1 record including wins over Jason Zimmerman of Duke, 2-6, 6-3, 3-0 retired and Brett Joelson of Texas Tech, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4. Matalonga defeated Chris Brown of Duke, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, before retiring in the second round to Alberto Francis of UCLA. Arizona competed in doubles for the first time as Lloyd and O'Grady teamed up to face Jason Gould and Martiji Zgaga of Tulsa. The pair lost 8-5, and marks the first time the pair has competed with since wining the Pac-10 Doubles Invitational in 2002.
ITA All-American: Seniors Carl Hagman and Tom Lloyd and junior Paul Warkentin traveled to Chattanooga, Tenn. The three men competed in the pre-qualifying rounds, which were held Oct. 3-5. Hagman defeated Jose Luis Leghuga of BYU, 7-6 (4), 6-2, which earned him a spot in the semifinals. Hagman finished the weekend 3-1 and improved to 6-2 for the fall. Warkentin made his first appearance of the fall where he also earned a spot in the semifinals by defeating Jose Luis Muguruza of Georgia Tech, 6-3, 7-6 (8). While competing in the finals, Warkentin was forced to retire due to an injury in the second set. Lloyd also made his first appearance of the fall season, as well as his first appearance since the ITA All-American last season. Lloyd earned a 2-1 record by defeating Miha Lisac of Georgia State, 6-2, 7-5, and Eric Hechtman of Miami, 6-4, 6-1.
Laguna Niguel (Calif.) Futures: The Wildcats traveled to Laguna Niguel, Calif., to compete in the Laguna Niguel Futures on Sept. 26-30. Senior Carl Hagman, junior Colin O'Grady, sophomore Roger Matalonga and freshman Nate Cochrane made the trip. Matalonga earned four victories and a spot in the main draw, where he lost to the No.18-seeded Adam Seri. At the No. 9 seed in the qualifying rounds, Hagman earned a record of 3-1. He was forced to retire in the finals of the qualifying after losing the first set, 6-2, and falling behind, 2-0. O'Grady fell in his opening round to Shane Laporte, 7-5, 7-5. Cochrane competed in his first tournament as a Wildcat and also fell in the first round to Colin Joyner, 6-2, 7-5.
