Bruin B-Squad Runs at CS Fullerton Invite Friday

Eric Peterson's UCLA men and women's cross country 'B' teams on Friday (Oct. 24) will run in the CS Fullerton Invitational, held in Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea. The women's 5K race will start at 4 p.m. and the men's 8K event begins at 4:45 p.m.
The UCLA varsity squads, this week the Bruin women are rated No. 15 in the U. S., will train through this weekend, preparing for the upcoming 2003 Pacific-10 Championships, held Saturday, Nov. 1 in Pullman and hosted by Washington State. The Pac-10 meet is the first of three major collegiate cross country events in the month of November. Following the conference meet, the 2003 NCAA Region VIII Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 15 in Portland and on Monday, Nov. 24 in Waterloo, IA, Northern Iowa University will host the 2003 NCAA Championships. Under Peterson, the Bruin women have qualified as a team to the NCAA Championships four of the last five years (2002-01-99-98).
Last Saturday (Oct. 18), the Bruin women and men's varsity squads competed in the Pre-National meet hosted by Northern Iowa University. The 6000m/8000m races were run on the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course in Waterloo, IA. Attracting the nation's top women and men's teams, the course is the site for the upcoming NCAA Championship.
On Oct. 18 at the Pre-National meet, there were two seeded 8000m races and the Bruin men ran in the Purple Race. UCLA finished 17th, with 443 points. The team winner (35 teams) of the Purple Race was No. 1 Stanford (25), followed by No. 10 Iona (95), No. 13 Michigan (148), Air Force (196) and No. 18 Villanova (204). The Bruins were led by freshman Austin Ramos (Sacramento/Jesuit), who placed 41st, in a time of 24.19.5. Also placing in the Top 55 for UCLA was junior Jon Rankin (Spring Valley/Monte Vista), who placed 54th (24:28.9). The individual winner of the Purple Race was Brigham Young's Kipi Kangogo (23:09.8).
