Men's Hoops Names Four Captains

Oct. 22, 2003

The Arizona State men's basketball team, which finished 20-12 last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, has named seniors Kenny Crandall and Brandon Goldman, junior point guard Jason Braxton and sophomore Ike Diogu as captains for the 2003-2004 season.

'All four of these players are leaders in our program both on the court and off, and we know they have a lot to share with our younger players,' says sixth-year head coach Rob Evans, who has eight players on his roster who have yet to play in a Division I game. 'Kenny was with our program six years ago when we arrived. Brandon is one of the most unselfish players I have ever coached. Jason has made a commitment to become a great player by working out here the past two summers. Ike Diogu is one of the best players in all of college basketball. They are all special people and we are confident in their leadership with our team, especially with our four true freshman.'

Crandall, a senior from Mesa Mountain View High School in Mesa, Ariz., has played in 78 games in his career, the most of anyone on the team. He started 28 games in his freshman year (1998-99) before going on a LDS mission for two seasons.

Goldman, a walkon from Glenbrook North High School in Illinois, earned his B.S. in management last spring and has been with the program for four years.

Braxton, from Canyon Springs High School in Moreno Valley, Calif., is a two-year starter at point guard who has played in all 61 games in his career.

Diogu earned Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and was an All-Pac-10 selection last year and is a preseason first-team All-American by Sporting News, College Basketball Preview, Basketball News and Street & Smith's.

ASU opens its exhibition season Nov. 12 against EA Sports All-Stars at 7 p.m. Its first regular season game is Nov. 22 against Arkansas-Little Rock at 1 p.m.

The team also has announced it will scrimmage at 10:30 on Nov. 1 at Wells Fargo Arena prior to the ASU-California homecoming game at 1:30. The football game will not be televised.
