UA Men's Tennis Competes in Qualifying Rounds at Regional Championships

CARSON, Calif. - The Arizona men's tennis team competed in the qualifying rounds of the Omni Hotel Region VIII South Fall Championships in Carson, Calif., Wednesday, October 22. Arizona fielded four men in the qualifying rounds, all of which received first round byes.

In the round of 32, sophomore Tim Mullane earned a victory over Eric Yandoc of UC Irvine, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Chris Gessner earned his first victory as a Wildcat with his win over Peter Surapol of UC Irvine, 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Zach Bromberg made his first start as a Wildcat and lost to Mike Coelho of San Diego State, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Nate Cochrane battled Arash Bormand of UC Irvine, splitting the first two sets, 5-7, 7-6, Cochrane fell in the final set, 15-13.

In the round of 16, Mullane fell to Beau Berglund of Loyola Marymount in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 10-8. Gessner lost to Leo Basica of UC Santa Barbara, 6-2, 6-4.

Arizona fielded two teams in doubles competition. In the round of 16, Bromberg and Mullane teamed up and defeated Justin Betyar and Devin Rippner of UC Riverside, 8-3. Cochrane and Gessner formed the second team, losing to Jeff Das and Matt Ozurovich of San Diego, 8-6.

In the quarterfinals, Bromberg and Mullane fell to Matt Phillips and Mike Wojnarowicz of Loyola Marymount, 8-4.
