TUCSON - 2003 Arizona Fall Softball Tournament

The UA softball team will play five games Oct. 24-26 in its annual fall softball tournament featuring Pima Community College, the University of New Mexico, Arizona Western CC, Central Arizona CC and another college-age team, Hum-Babe Cats.

Grand Canyon University withdrew from the tournament earlier this week, causing a re-adjustment of the schedule.

Fifteen games will be played in the three-day tournament, with more than half hosted on the UA campus at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium and the rest played at Pima's Westside campus facility. All the UA games will be at Hillenbrand.

University of Arizona coach Mike Candrea is in town for the competition and to host a coaching clinic, taking a break from duties as the head coach of USA Softball's team that will play in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Assistants Larry Ray and Nancy Evans will take care of the bulk of Candrea's UA duties for the 2004 season, serving as interim head coaches.

UA players have been involved in individual workouts during the fall and began team workouts a week ago to prepare for the fall competition.

Admission is free.
