Clemens, Kwinta Advance to Quarterfinals

Carson, Calif. - Top-seeded Tobias Clemens and 9-16 seeded Kris Kwinta of UCLA both advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA West Regionals Friday.

After dropping the first set against 9-16 seeded Arnar Sigurdsson of Pacific, Clemens rebounded to win the next two sets, taking a 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 victory. He next faces USC's Ruben Torres.

Kwinta was extended to a tiebreaker in the first set against seventh-seeded Stefan Suta of Fresno State, but eventually moved on to a 7-6(4), 6-4 decision. He will take on SDSU's Felix Hardt in the next round.

Losing in the round of 16 Friday was Bruin junior Alberto Francis, who dropped a tough three-set battle to fourth-seeded Pedro Rico of Pepperdine, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

In main draw doubles action, fifth-seeded Francis and Kwinta were upset in the round of 16 by UC Irvine's Ryusuke Kashiwabara/Zoran Korac, 8-5. It was the first match they have lost together after starting the season 9-0 and claiming the first two tournaments.

The Bruins also have two players still competing in the consolation singles draw, as Chris Lam and Chris Surapol have advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals.
