CU GOLFERS IN FOURTH BUT IN HUNT AT THE NELSON

Oct 24, 2003

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Colorado men's golf team slipped a bit from a second place tie into fourth but remains very much in the hunt here as the second round of Stanford's "The Nelson" was completed here Saturday.

Washington shot the tournament's best round to move into first with a 557 score, but seven teams are within 10 strokes of the lead.  The Huskies lead Duke by two, Kansas by five and the Buffaloes by six, as CU record an even-par 284 second round score for a 563 total.

CU sophomore Edward McGlasson is tied for 10th individually, as he shot a 72 Saturday for a three-under par 139 total.  Senior Jeff Hanson had a second straight solid performance, recording his best score of the season, a two-under 69, for a 140 total which is good for 17th place.

Sophomore Kenny Coakley and senior Kane Webber, who shot a 1-under 70 in the second round, are tied for 29th with even-par 142 totals.

Toledo's Brad Heaven held the individual lead for the second straight round, adding a 3-under 68 to his opening 64 for a 10-under 132, which is good for a three stroke lead of two tied at 135.

"This is exactly where we wanted to be, to have the chance to win a golf tournament heading into the final round," CU head coach Mark Simpson said. "Though it's early in the year, it's a key round for this team.  It will tell us a lot about ourselves and it will be an asset for us the remainder of the year because we will draw on the experience and learn from it."

The final round is set for Sunday.  The Buffs are bidding to win their first tournament since winning the Colorado State Intercollegiate in September 2000.
