Four UW Crews Compete at Portland Loop Regatta

Oct. 24, 2003

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Washington rowing team will be represented by four crews Saturday when the 15th-annual Portland Loop Regatta takes place on the Willamette River's Lake Oswego/Oaks Park course.

Competition begins at 10 a.m. on a five-mile stretch at the Portland section of the Willamette River. The 'head' races are a break from the straight, 2,000-meter courses customarily contested by collegians. Teams start from a single-file line at set intervals and must navigate around opposing crews in order to pass.

Several crews from throughout the Northwest are expected to row Saturday, including Division I competitors Oregon State, Oregon and Portland.

'We've been training in the pairs all fall and only rowed twice in the eights this week,' explained first-year UW women's coach Eleanor McElvaine. 'It's a difficult transition for us, but it is exciting for them to get out and race in the eights. This breaks up all the technical work we do in the pairs and reminds us that what we are really here for is to make the eights go fast.'

The Huskies are entering a varsity eight and junior varsity eight in the men's and women's competition. Last season all four Washington boats were victorious in their respective events. The UW men's and women's junior varsity crews won the collegiate eight competitions while the varsity boats claimed the championship eight titles. Host Oregon State was the runner-up in all four featured races last year.

Competing in the top Washington men's boat at Portland are five rowers from the varsity eight crew that won the 2003 Pac-10 championship and was the national runner-up at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships. The Washington women have just two members of last year's varsity eight that finished fourth at the NCAA Championships.

The Portland Loop is the first race of the season for the UW rowers who conclude the fall season on Sunday, Nov. 9 at the Head of the Lake Regatta that begins at 8 a.m. in Lake Union.
